Crafting Customer Loyalty: The Sustainable Beer Approach

The beer-drinking community is increasingly aware of the environmental implications of their choices. From our recent global survey of 3,500 beer drinkers, 75% are very or somewhat interested in the production process in general. Consumers need more than a label indicating that the product was sustainably produced when making a purchasing decision.  In fact, fewer than one in ten feel well-informed about the environmental impact of the beer they drink. One thing is clear: brewers can positively impact their customers - and their brand - by sharing their environmental credentials.

What impact can sharing sustainable practices have on breweries and their consumers?

With one in four beer drinkers wanting sustainable options, brewers have a unique opportunity to meet demand and lead the industry in promoting and prioritizing sustainable practices. Educating consumers about the brewing process can help them make informed and sustainable choices while fostering brand loyalty as consumers continue seeking breweries that align with their values.

Brewers can expect a positive response to their sustainable practices. Our survey also indicates that between 42% and 50% of beer drinkers say they would pay a premium for environmentally sustainable beer.  This willingness to pay more is driven by the understanding that sustainable beer production involves additional costs, such as investing in renewable energy sources, implementing efficient water management systems, and promoting fair trade practices. Consumers perceive these extra expenses as a positive investment in the environment and society, making them more inclined to support and purchase economically sustainable beer.

By showcasing sustainable practices and assisting consumers in making informed choices, brewers can position themselves as trailblazers in the industry, attracting more environmentally conscious customers. This, in turn, contributes to a more sustainable beer industry, where every brewer has the potential to impact the environment significantly.

The prominence of waste reduction in the consumer mindset is an excellent example of this. While we expect packaging and CO2 reduction to dominate conceptions of sustainable beer, communicating filtration's role in eliminating other waste is beneficial. From our survey, US respondents particularly stress waste reduction and transparent, environmentally sustainable production as something they want to hear more about.

Our survey discovered that when consumers are informed about the brewing process, six in ten recognize filtration's importance in sustainability. Filtration solutions are a sustainable option for breweries aiming to reduce their environmental impact. They can help breweries minimize water, energy usage and beer loss. With membrane filtration, there is no need for diatomaceous earth (DE), which is a challenge to acquire and dispose of. Modern membrane filter systems do not need pre-and-post runs, significantly reducing water consumption compared to DE filters at the same level. Electrical and thermal energy can also be reduced considerably with efficient filtration solutions. This reassures brewers that they have the tools and technology to make a real difference in their environmental impact.

We are committed to supporting brewers with sustainable practices and have a suite of sustainable filtration solutions to meet this need.
