Control Fluids in Steam Plant

Your integrated partner in Power Generation. Protects against crucial components from corrosion and enable turbines to run at peak efficiencies

Steam Plant Control Fluid Filtration – Protecting Critical Control Systems

Our control fluid filters minimize fluid contaminants in steam turbine control systems, which protects crucial components from corrosion and enables turbines to run at peak efficiencies.

The primary objectives for the steam turbine control (or governing) system is to maintain a constant speed of rotation irrespective of the varying load requirement, to regulate the rate of steam inlet and assign the alignment of vanes in the compressor.  Steam turbines are dependent on hydraulic systems in steam valves to control and regulate critical operations. Our filters and purifiers for control fluid in steam plants remove contaminants and water content in hydraulic fluids to optimize power and control steam plant functions. Maintaining the correct levels of fluid cleanliness and condition is essential to prevent:

Benefits of Steam Plant Control Fluid Filtration:

Maintaining the correct levels of fluid cleanliness and condition is essential to prevent:

  • Increased downtime and loss of production
  • Costly fluid disposal and component replacement
  • Increased operating and maintenance costs
  • Decreased efficiency of energy transmission
  • Introduced friction to lubricated parts
  • Inhibited effective heat transfer
  • Corroded seals between moving parts
  • Leakage, wear of elastomers and seals
  • Erosive wear to valve body

Keeping Control Fluids in Steam Turbine Clean and Dry

Synthetic fluids are often used in control systems, operating at pressures of over 70 bar (1000 psi) to ensure a rapid hydraulic response. At these pressures, the potential for fluid leaks is greater as is the attendant fire hazard, making phosphate esters the hydraulic fluid of choice as they are fire-resistant, self-extinguishing, and inherently safer than other fluid chemistries.  They also tend to be expensive fluids; therefore important that operators maximize their service life.

Phosphate ester fluids will decompose in the presence of elevated moisture, creating acids and alcohols; therefore operators should try to keep water levels lower than 500ppm for optimum performance. Reducing the moisture and subsequent acid levels will maintain the fluid's fire-resistant properties and prevent accelerated component corrosion.  Pall’s range of HLP or HNP vacuum dehydration purifiers offer operators a wide choice of sizes and system flow rates to provide continuous off-line water removal treatment, protecting the control system regardless of load. In addition, ion exchange treatment by the Pall Sentry resin system effectively removes acid to extend fluid service life, minimize corrosion and fouling due to deposit and/or varnish formation.

Athalon™ Filters: The Key to Superior Control Fluid Cleanliness in Power Generation

Fluid cleanliness specifcations are maintained by Pall’s Athalon™ hydraulic and lube oil filters which combine Betax(c)≥2000 rated, stress-resistant filter technology and a full range of housings to provide the greatest overall filter performance and value available in the Power Generation industry today. Most importantly, the Athalon filter media has anti-static properties preventing the incidence of electrostatic discharge and further potential varnish formation.
