Proper mercury removal
Regenerable systems have two or more adsorption towers
Producing natural gas often requires removal of toxic mercury. Long identified as a health hazard, mercury can also result in damaged equipment though liquid-metal embrittlement (LME), fires, unscheduled shut downs, and numerous problems in downstream operations. Proper mercury removal can ensure the continued reliability of mission critical equipment while maintaining gas quality that meets specification.
Mercury removal is accomplished with either non-regenerative or regenerative adsorbents. Natural gas enters the top of an adsorption tower and flows downward through the adsorbent bed where the mercury is adsorbed, exiting the bottom for further processing or sale. Regenerable systems have two or more adsorption towers; one is regenerated while the others are in operation. Bed regeneration is done by flowing heated regeneration gas upward through the bed. Contaminants adsorbed near the inlet can then be removed without flushing them through the entire bed.

The SepraSol Plus and the Medallion HP liquid/gas coalescer assemblies utilize a dual stage separation. A knockout sump pretreatment is followed by a media coalescence final treatment provides removal that accepts most slugs without bypass or loss of removal efficiency.
Pall’s proprietary hydrophobically and oleophobically treated coalescers provide superior continuous liquid removal performance, and recover quickly from most short-term liquid overloads, minimizing the pressure drop across the assembly and chance of liquid carryover.
The SepraSol Plus liquid/gas coalescer or the Medallion HP liquid/gas coalescer protect beds through the removal of liquid water and hydrocarbons that shorten adsorbent life. Improved absorber efficiency and capacity improves productivity, process and equipment reliability and on-spec mercury content.
b) Downstream Protection
The Pall DGF Dry Gas Particulate Filters such as MCC1401 style dry gas filters and Profile® Coreless dry gas filters removes mercury adsorbent fines and other contaminants from the gas stream before it enters the cryogenic unit, pipeline, compressor, or catalyst bed.
